BHHHC ladies 1st XI came out fighting for the second game back after the Christmas break against West Herts 3’s, after a disappointing last minute draw against Broxbourne the previous week.

The game started at a great pace, with man to man marking, making attacking very difficult for the opposition. Trying to put minimal touch and pass training into practice, great opportunities were created, moving the ball up the pitch as a team. This allowed for some breakaway drives by the forwards and midfielders, putting pressure on the oppositions defence. With a few near misses on goal, and many opportunities, Berkhamsted ladies 1 XI were surely building towards a greatly anticipated first goal.
Whilst Berkhamsted had much of the possession and were awarded several short corners, they were finding converting great goal opportunities, difficult. However, the persistence paid off, and a sharp square cross from top goal scorer Rosie during open play, allowed Harriette to slip a goal past the keeper from the left post.
Now 1-0 up the game was still all to play for. With several great runs from defenders Helen, Meg and Emma, driving the team to play high and maintain play within the oppositions territory, the first half time ended 1-0, with the team eager to keep a clean sheet during the remainder of the game.
After half time Percy-Pigs for an energy boost, Berko ladies went back to play, all guns blazing. Once again some great opportunities on goal were created, but the persistence of the West Herts defence and some great saves from their goalie, were an obstacle. Rosie made some great ‘twizzles’ within the D, rewarding us with another short corner, which we were unable to score from. Despite this, the second goal was created through team work; a cross into the D from Harriette, allowed a touch from Abi to be slipped once again into West Herts goal from the left post.
Despite the now 2-0 lead, Berkhamsted ladies experience 10 minutes of head loss, where panicked passing and a lack of man marking allowed the opposition several chances on goal. After half a dozen short corners awarded to West Herts, Berkhamsted were not going to allow our 2-0 lead to be jeopardised. Some speedy runs out from Helen and the Defensive short corner team, put major pressure on the opposition and fortunately for Berkhamsted, West Herts couldn’t convert.
An injury to the opposition, allowed stoppage time for a quick calm team talk from the ace goal keeper Vicky, who delivered a calm refocusing message, to get heads back into the game and think about marking and team work. This team talk proved effective, as Berkhamsted worked towards their 3rd goal, this time scored by our midfielder Pip. A quick sideline ball taken by Sarah, was passed to Harriette where a hard cross into the D, was received by Abi, and a quick tap to Pip allowed a lifted ball, over the keeper into the top of the oppositions net. The final result was 3-0 as the FT whistle was blown immediately following this goal; a great result and clean sheet for the ladies 1 XI.
Now only just second in the league (1 point behind Saffron Walden), but with the highest goal difference (18), the second half of the season is bound to be a close competition.
MOM was awarded to Harriette, but the game was fundamentally won by great team work from all, with high intensity from the defence to the forwards.
