It was a winner takes all match and the ladies 3’s were well prepared for their penultimate match of the season against Stevenage.
With Berko second and Stevenage 3rd the stakes were high. Emma Swords started the morning by sending pre match inspirational quotes, Kate Hedge had extra bacon for breakfast whilst Jo and Chops discussed tactics over a breakfast in town.
The highlight pre match however was the pleasing sight of Sophie Lawrence in her kit on the touchline after missing several matches whilst recuperating. Welcome back Sophie.
The first half was very close with fierce tackles all over the pitch. Berkhamsted won a short corner and Terri struck the back well only to see Kate G inches from deflecting it in. Stevenage caused a few problems themselves and Chops had to save smartly on a couple of occasions. Rebecca, Helen, Liz and Sophie defended resolutely in front of Chops to keep the score goalless at half time.
The game followed a similar pattern in the second half with every ball contested with vigour from both sides. Hannah, Terri, and both Kate’s battled hard up front but were unable to find a way through. Rosie showed great energy in midfield along with Emma, Jo and Ellie ‘thou shall not pass’ Fido.
When Stevenage did break through Chops was secure in front of goal.
With the final whistle seconds away Berko suffered a cruel blow when Liz made an awesome tackle on the edge of the D but Stevenage pounced on the rebound and Chops was unable to keep it out.
There was no time to respond as the final whistle blew.
The ladies should be proud of their resilience in a really tough match.
Player of the match for several smart saves was Chops.
