A good battling performance this week against a decent Welwyn side who applied a lot of early pressure having won the toss and started with the ball.
The slightly make-shift Berko defense coped well however with Charlie Gray slotting back into his familiar right back position and having a good game. Also, in a bid to preserve him, Rocky was asked to play in the centre of defense where he excelled, of course!
The game was well balanced with both sides creating chances but neither finding the net. No success either for both teams from the half dozen penalty corners won. Rog always seemed to be on the bench when needed for these!
Stalemate at the break and the second half was more of the same. However it was Welwyn who struck first after an uncharacteristic defensive muddle allowing them to score a scrappy goal. Disappointing but Berko were not disheartened and renewed their offensive creating chances and winning penalty corners not least from the efforts of Oli Johnson in midfield who deserved his Man of the Match award.
The Berko midfield were working hard. Gareth Gainer and Will Alderson made important contributions, Will lasting the course which was good to see! Paul Whitby, asked to play out of position again gave his usual 100%. As observed towards the end of the first half, it was Welwyn who were showing signs of wear as the game neared its end. Berko stepped up the pressure. Will Goodwyn coming close with a well struck shot just wide. Finally, with 5 to go, the home side were rewarded with the equalizer from ‘miss’em to score’em Payton senior who was on the pitch and in the right place to strike firmly home in the far corner.
An enjoyable contest which, for most of the game, showed what the 2s are capable of and that we’re not out of place in this division. One each probably a fair result.
Thanks to Liz and David for umpiring!
