The long drive, chilly start and light rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the Men’s 3 as they took to the pitch against promotion contenders, Shefford & Sandy 2s, with a lively opening to the game.
Chances were created at both ends, but it was Tom Walker who opened the scoring with a composed strike past the Shefford keeper.
Shefford came back with a renewed energy and tit-for-tat goals moved the score to 2-2 including a neatly finished move by Will Goodwyn and a questionable penalty flick which Shefford converted.
Entering the closing phases of the game, the Berko press was increasing in its effectiveness, netting Steve Redman a potential match winner. Unfortunately, Shefford eventually put away one of their many short corners, resulting in a tense final 5 minutes.
At the whistle, Berko took a well-earned point – in no small part to the sterling efforts of man of the match, Mark Johnson, who made a series of great saves. A superb team effort means that the 3s have plenty of positives to take into the next game with Harpenden.
