Berkhamsted 4th XI v Maidenhead Merlins 14 November 2009Despite the stormy weather, the Berkhamsted pitch was in good condition for the Thames Valley Conference match against Maidenhead. Berkhamsted started brightly and played the ball well through the midfield creating a number of chances but found the Maidenhead keeper in good form.
This pattern continued for the whole of the first half with the occasional Maidenhead attacks being well dealt with by Pete Kuipers and Ian Odell in the Berkhamsted defence, but the attack was unable to convert the chances arising despite good efforts from John King and Alex Hardwicke. The second half began in similar fashion although Dave Hargreaves in the Berko goal had a bit more to deal with. The deadlock was finally broken midway through the second half when, following good work on the right by Alex Winwright, Terry Wintle played a through ball to Brian de Mattos who squeezed the ball past the keeper off the inside of the post. Berkhamsted continued to control the play and added a second 8 minutes from the end when Oli Rogers was on hand to convert a cross from Alex Winwright to score his first ever goal for the club. However, this goal seemed to rouse Maidenhead and they attacked straight from the restart and although Dave Hargreaves saved the first effort, he was powerless to prevent the follow up shot from crossing the line. Maidenhead then had their greatest period of pressure but good defending prevented them from snatching an equaliser. A very enjoyable game played in the right spirit by both sides. Result: Berkhamsted 2 Maidenhead 1 Scorers: Brian de Mattos, Oli Rogers |
