Berkhamsted 3rd XI 1 Farnham Common Wrinklies 2

Berkhamsted Thirds opened 2009 with a friendly against old foes, the Wrinklies. The cold weather made the pitch hard but it was playable and Wrinklies made the better start to the match. However, good defence and some excellent saves from Terry Wintle kept Wrinklies at bay and, in a rare attack, Steve Thie fed Brian de Mattos who managed to beat his marker and get in a shot at goal that was touched home by Jim Watson. In the second half Berkhamsted had more of the play and should have doubled their advantage following a good move down the right wing but an unfortunate bobble prevented the final pass from reaching its target and Wrinklies broke away and scored with a well placed shot. Shortly afterwards a miss hit 16 yard hit passed possession to the Wrinklies with the Berkhamsted defence out of position and they took full advantage to take the lead. Berkhamsted had a few half chances to equalise but this never materialised and as the sun set and the frost started to get into the pitch both sides were happy to retire to the warmth of the bar.

 Scorer: Jim Watson
