Berkhamsted 3rd XI 3 Potters Bar 1
Berkhamsted Thirds met league leaders Potters Bar on a very cold day at Tring School. Potters Bar started slowly and gave away possession from which Tim Buckley found Nick Cave at the top of the circle, he won a tackle and then found Brian de Mattos who opened the scoring in the first minute.
This served to wake up Potters Bar who dominated possession from then on. Fine defensive work from the whole team restricted Potters Bar to few chances and Terry Wintle was in inspired form to keep out the shots that did materialise. Early in the second half Berkhamsted won their only short corner and, from this, Steve Thie despatched a fine shot into the corner of the net. Shortly after this Potters Bar finally scored from their umpteenth short corner with a good angled shot and this renewed the pressure on the Berkhamsted defence. However, the defence was well marshalled by Steve Thie and kept Potters Bar at bay before a breakaway started by Tim Buckley resulted in a cross from Trevor Whitehead being touched by Brian de Mattos into the path of Jim Watson who scored Berkhamsted’s third. This was an excellent team performance to win against a good side who will surely be promoted this year.
