Members who remember Chris Battcock and his five sons Humphrey, Tim, Ben, Mike & David all of whom have appeared for the club will be interested to know that Hump's son Ben was captain of Oxford's Hockey team who were recently victorious in the 2009 Varsity match held at Southgate HC.
This was Ben's third varsity match and having lost in the previous two he was at last a winning Blue. The game started brightly and Cambridge who were favourites went into an early lead catching Oxford off guard. The dark blues responded well and gradually gained territorial advantage creating several good chances but none were taken by half time.
The second half saw Oxford continue to dominate and they were eventually rewarded with an equaliser. Further chances occurred at both ends with the keepers bringing off several good saves. Oxford began to take charge of midfield and finally a spectacular reverse stick strike by one of the oxford forwards took them into the lead midway through the second half.
Cambridge responded with some good attacks but this left them exposed at the back and Oxford rattled in a third when the Cambridge Keeper was caught out of position. A fourth goal in the closing minutes completed a convincing victory.
No doubt Chris Battcock was looking down from above and would have been very proud of young Ben even though he was a Cambridge student himself.Humphrey, Tim and Ben, who was on a visit from Australia, were there to watch.
