Close but not close enough

It was a chilly and cloudy afternoon when the Men's 2’s stepped onto the newbury astro, hopes were high due to the pre game talk and strategy from Paul where we decided to play a half court press. We were feeling confident as we started with 13 players (2 subs to help the old men out). The 2 youngsters Theo and Dylan started the game on the bench ready to use their younger legs .It was an even game and as time wore down the energy didn't waiver however, we fell to a very late goal in the first half to put us 1:0 down. We held on until half time and were rejuvenated by a half time talk. However it seems Newbury also had an inspirational speech leading them to score within the first 30 seconds of the second half, despite this our faith didn't waiver and we scored shortly after with a goal from Roger (men's 2s main striker himself), and yet another assist from the cursed ethan (striker whos yet to score) putting us back into fighting position at 2:1. We stayed in this position for ages, both teams having a few chances but being unable to convert. Yet Newbury kept the pressure on with many players in the D. Robin takes down a quick ball (from what we saw, perfectly), however the refs disagree and to everyones amazement awarded a short corner, this quick exchange of bad luck offers Newbury the chance they needed to convert the attack into a game changing goal. Spirits waivered and hearts were broken this new score of 3:1 felt impossible to comeback from yet the Mens 2s fought on keeping the score the same and having another few promising attacks yet still being unable to convert them to goals. After another good attack from the opposition, Berko fell to 4:1 down. The comeback seemed impossible yet we continued the fight. After yet another great attack from the berko mens 2s we scored again with a good goal from Hugo and a spark of hope appeared in the old hearts of the Mens 2s however this was quickly extinguished by Newbury quick and merciless attack putting us down at 5:2. The men's 2s still weren't discouraged and continued the fight ending the game with a short corner which nearly put us up again. Overall the game ended with moral high and the players were happy to have had a good and hard game, the men's 2s retreated back to the local clubhouse to a barrage of fines by roger.
