How Our Coaches Inspired Over 500 Children in Four Incredible Days

There’s nothing quite like the buzz of a playground filled with laughter, hockey sticks in hand, and children discovering the joy of a new sport. Over four energetic days, Tom Walker, Jonathan Savage, and Megan Savage brought that buzz to life, delivering hockey sessions to children across local primary schools as part of our Free Hockey School Days programme.

For our coaching team, it was never just about drills and games. It was about helping children grow in confidence and experiencing the magic of hockey, sometimes within minutes. Whether it was a quiet Year 1 pupil finding their voice in a team game or a group learning the power of working together, the change was inspiring to watch.

You see kids come alive when they feel supported,” said Tom. “That boost in confidence — that’s the magic of it.

For Jonathan, the experience also built his confidence as a coach. “Working with younger children really sharpens your ability to communicate clearly, lead with positivity, and adapt when things don’t go as planned,” he said. “Those are skills you can take with you into any part of life.

Megan reflected on the joy of seeing every child, whether sporty or not, get involved, feel included, and have fun. Structured but full of energy, the sessions struck a perfect balance between skill-building and sheer enjoyment.

And the response from schools? The feedback said it all.
The sessions were absolutely fantastic!” said South Hill Primary School. “The two coaches were brilliant with the children — naturally fantastic, keeping them happy, motivated, and engaged, even in extremely warm weather! The sessions flowed smoothly from warm-up to skills and matches — it was so professionally done. We are hugely thankful to Tom and Jon.

With schools already asking for return visits and coaching, we’re excited to watch this programme grow and we want you to be part of it.

At BHHHC, we believe in giving back, inspiring others, and investing in the next generation of hockey players. Coaching is one of the most rewarding ways you can make a difference,  whether you're passing on your love of the game, helping young players find confidence, or building your own leadership and communication skills along the way.
