Spirit of Hockey

Spirit of Hockey

BHHHC Content Editor8 Sep - 07:30

The code of conduct is designed to ensure that everyone in our sport contributes to an environment that is safe, respectful, and enjoyable for all.

We often describe ourselves as a family-friendly, inclusive club—our latest survey showed that members view this as one of our greatest strengths. We're proud of this and are keen to keep building on it—after all, who doesn’t want more of a good thing?

Therefore, we are launching a campaign to increase awareness of the EH code of conduct: Spirit of hockey.

“The code of conduct is designed to ensure that everyone in our sport, from players and coaches to umpires, officials, and spectators, contributes to an environment that is safe, respectful, and enjoyable for all.

By adhering to this code and embracing these values, we demonstrate the behaviours expected of participants within the game. These values unite us as a sport—it is reflected in how we communicate, treat each other with respect, act with integrity, behave within our community, involve others, and see hockey as a force for good in society”.

What is expected of us?

“Hockey is a sport rooted in inclusivity, mutual support, and respect, where passion fuels participation and challenges are met with resilience. Winning gracefully, accepting losses with dignity, respecting officials and their decisions are fundamental values we want to continue to be upheld.
This ethos extends beyond the field, encompassing all roles within the game, from administrators to committee members and beyond. By embracing and adhering to this code, we maintain the sport's reputation, support it’s goals, and enrich its culture”.

In short, our aim is to embed this code into every aspect of club life, so that every member can flourish.

As individuals within this hockey community, we all have a part to play in achieving this.
Our first responsibility is for our own actions. However, everyone is encouraged to raise concerns about the well-being of members or inappropriate behaviour that falls below expected standards. These concerns can be raised through multiple channels:

Alternatively, you can speak to any committee member – all of whom are doing additional awareness training. All issues will be taken seriously and safeguarding concerns will always be referred to our Welfare Officers.

If you would like to understand more, EH provide the following on-line safeguarding awareness module. Its free and takes less than 30 minutes to complete.
