Your Club Needs You

BHHHC Content Editor26 May - 14:00

Every Role Matters. Every Volunteer Makes a Difference.

Our hockey club is a fantastic community that relies on volunteers to make it run.

So many of you contribute in different ways, both on an ad-hoc basis and by taking on some of the more official roles.

The next AGM is coming soon where we elect next season’s club leadership and we are always looking for new people to be involved to help us achieve our core purpose of developing and promoting hockey.

Club Leadership – Vacancies Team 26/27

Most of the current club leadership have agreed to continue for next season – if re-elected of course! However, the following important roles are currently vacant for next season:

1. A Youth Co-ordinator to:

  • Lead the Youth section and chair the team of youth managers
  • Relationship manager for youth coaches
  • Oversee the Schools Outreach programme and other recruitment initiatives
  • Represent the Youth section on the Exec and Hockey Committees
2. A Women’s Club Captain to:
  • Lead the women’s section and chair the selection team
  • Represent the Women’s section as a director on the Exec and Hockey Committees.

IMPORTANT - These roles can definitely be shared! Eg Chris Baker and Nigel Edwards are joint Men’s Club captains but only Chris is on the Exec. Tim French and Terri-Ann Nichol have shared the Youth Co-ordinator role and Robyn Fennell is running the Schools Outreach programme.

3. Marketing and Comms Coordinator to build and lead a team to raise the profile of the Club and hockey in the community, both locally and online. Too often we hear people remark ‘I never knew there was a hockey club here!’.

Not interested in this role? Perhaps you interested in creating content (eg photos, videos, writing articles, designing flyers etc) or helping us reach out to the community (eg arranging taster sessions, running stalls at local markets, putting up posters etc etc)? If so please get in touch. This is an important area for the Club to improve.

4. Hockey Treasurer as Charlie Michie would like to move on from this role. This is another Hockey Committee role and involves processing expenses (match teas for instance) but also developing and monitoring the Hockey budget and liaising with the Club Treasurer, Brian de Mattos. Familiarity with budgeting and accounting is preferred.

5. Hockey Secretary to organise Hockey Committee meetings, take minutes and keep a note of actions. A straightforward role suited to someone who can attend the meetings and be part of the team but who does not have much time beyond that.

6. Health & Safety Officer An important non-committee role to ensure injuries and incidents are recorded on Sportsmart and that the First Aid kits are well stocked.

If you would like to get involved either by taking on one of the club leadership roles or would like to helping out in other ways please contact Kate Goodwyn or hockey@berkohockeyclub.com. Or speak to the committee members listed below.

If you are interested in one part of a role, get in contact – there are bound to be ways to make it fit – passion and commitment goes a long way!!

Some Background

Who are the ‘Club Leadership’?

  • The Exec - The board of directors of Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead Hockey Club Ltd’s who run the whole club on behalf of the membership. Ideally, all parts of the Club are represented and involved in decisions about the future of our Hockey Club and the assets at Cowroast.
  • The Hockey Committee - This is the group of people responsible for delivering the fun, competitive and safe hockey that our members want - both day to day but also planning for the future. They do not need to be directors.
  • The Directors of Trading - The purpose of Trading is to support hockey by generating an income from the Club’s asset (pitches, clubhouse and padel courts). We had to set up a separate company as part of becoming a CASC (Community Amateur Sports Club with some charity like tax benefits). Padel is organised by the Padel committee which is appointed by club leadership.
