On Wednesday evening, Berko entertained a very strong RAF squad (or two from their numbers) in their annual winter friendly ahead of their Forces tournament.
In a much changed side, the 1s welcomed youngsters Jack, Jonny & Ryan into the side all making their 1st team debuts - something this fixture has allowed us to do for many years and aid in their development.
At this point, I must be honest and admit that I missed the first 10 minutes of the game due to poor planning with the trains, however, I am reliably informed that both sides created a few good opportunities but were unable to make a breakthrough.
As the game developed, Berko took control of the midfield and took a hold of possession creating multiple opportunities. As the short corner count mounted (let’s not talk about this) the ball broke to Luke Frey who drove into the D pulling the ball back for Oscar Hart of the back post to slot into the goal.
For the remainder of the first 2 quarters this narrative continued in the game with Berko having the majority of possession but unable to find that elusive second goal.
As the temperature plummeted, the second half began with the same story of Berko maintaining the advantage on the pitch.
Again, I must be honest here and note that I missed the second goal (probably signing autographs or something similar). Nonetheless, 2-0 Berko which apparently has gone down as an Own Goal - if anyone wishes to claim this I am willing to amend this report post publishing in exchange for a pint….
Into the final quarter we go (I hope you have all made it this far). With some good work down the right hand side, the ball deflected through to the back post for Ryan H to grab his debut goal which a neat deflection.
3-0. Game over.
Thank you to all the spectators who came to watch - your support over the last couple of weeks for the 1s and each other is a testament to the family community we have within the club.
