Berko 2s vs Witney 3s – Match Report

In a game that felt more like an overseas expedition than a domestic league fixture, Berko 2s took the long haul to Witney 3s — so far, in fact, that Pete was rumoured to have brought his passport. Border checks may have been passed, but what unfolded on the pitch was nothing short of dramatic.

Warm-Up Shenanigans & Team Confusion

Jason took the reins for the warm-up, confusion quickly followed when it became apparent that despite having 13 players in the squad, there were at least 14 people named Tom. We suspect some of them duplicated themselves to guarantee selection.

A Promising Start… But Who Invited Their First Team Forward?

Berko began brightly, stringing together slick passes and aerials aplenty courtesy of Dave English, who spent most of the first half launching missiles into orbit. But against the run of play, Witney snuck in with a breakaway goal. 1-0.

It went from bad to worse when their centre-forward (rumoured to usually play for their 1s and possibly moonlights for Southgate) managed to dispossess Dave with a rare mistake. He turned with such speed and grace that Dave was left sitting on the floor, looking like an idiot . Goal. 2-0.
Nightmare.

But Then... A Pete-Powered Comeback

Undeterred, Berko turned up the heat. Paul Kraft delivered a pinpoint ball from the right, and Pete did what Pete does best — score goals. 2-1. Game on.

Shortly after, a slick short corner routine involving Tupper, Swampy, and Pete drew gasps of admiration (mostly from ourselves, but still). 2-2. The comeback was well and truly on.

Just before the half-time whistle, Pete completed his hat-trick with a finish so clinical it may have required a medical licence. 3-2 Berko. The away crowd (Tom's Mum and a confused Dog walker) went wild.

Second Half: Cards, Grit and Glory

The second half offered fewer goals but more aggression, as both Paul and Jason earned themselves green cards for what we’re generously calling “enthusiastic challenges.”

Defensively, Jamie and Paul were absolute rocks — if rocks had hockey sticks and a disdain for conceding goals. Special shoutouts to:

Luca – the new kid on the block, calm as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce.
Matt – tireless, relentless, and probably still running as we speak.
All the Toms – every single one of them. Everywhere. All at once.
Pete – in goal, kept us in it on several occasions, and always a commanding force on the pitch.

Final Score: 3-2 Berko 2s
Man of the Match: Tom (yes, that one — or maybe the other one)
Dick of the Day: Dave — for that sit-down chat with the turf after getting turned inside out.
