Eunice’s shrapnel was scattered over the pitch but thankfully the torrential rain of the morning had passed. We gathered together for a quick team talk to address the elephant in the room – we were playing against friends, family (‘Do NOT hurt my daughter!!’), basically, our sisters in the 4s but we had to win to keep our promotion hopes alive. There was no alternative but to play this game as if it was any other match against outside opposition.
Although the 4s showed that they had plenty of individual skill and Sammie in goal pulled off some superb saves, it was not long before we opened the scoring and by halftime were 6-0 ahead. Pleasingly, this was as much due to the passing game (including transfers across the back) that we have been working on over the past few weeks. The second half was much the same – the 4s kept up the fight but our team play was hard to resist, resulting in a final score of 11-0.
Goal scorers were: Kate G (4); Emma Swords (3); Hazel (2) and one each for Kate H and Eimear. POM votes were distributed amongst the whole team for a whole team performance but, Saff pipped it with one more vote than the next person, for another solid performance that demonstrated how far her game has come this season. The Pirate award went to Suzie for being a pirate defender and scaring any attempt of attack, spectator glasses went to Sylvia and the Clown award went to Hazel for clowning around on the forward line and juggling the ball around the goalie. Finally the other players on the day who all made a huge contribution were: Amy, Bunni (mids), Ame and Jo (defence).
Special thanks to our umpires, Peter K (as ever) and Lou who stepped in as a last minute replacement when Stef was 'Euniced' and unable to get back from Cornwall.
