The Marvelous Maidens played Camberley and Farnham at Lockhart Fields. This Masters league is getting tougher by the week with the Maidens often having to fit in two or even three games on a weekend with long travels.
With Vicky literally wiping off the mould from her keepers kit, the game felt like a win in itself, welcoming her back on the pitch after a long 15 months of injury.
We tried to reassure her that she was in safe hands being surrounded by her mightly defenders in Emma, Ame, Sarah, Jo and Sophie with Rosey being our super sub. But as most keepers of Maidens can testify, it's never for the faint hearted in a Masters league.
Maidens started strong on attack with play being pushed wide to our outer midfielders of Kelly and Kate. The inner channels were being kept under tight control by Deb and Faye despite strong attacks from the opo. Sarah B allowed for some well earned leg rests subbing accross the midline and played a very versatile game getting her head around the Maidens' formation.
Feisty forwards were Jenny, Ali and Terri. The opo remarked on it being tricky to mark the Maidens and equally, how well the Maidens were marking them.
And a feisty start it was with a Terri involcing elbows and trapped shoelaces. What do they say about dynamite and small packages?
But it wasn't long before Deb took the space into the D and slotted a strike into the back of the net.
The Maidens looked confident and further attacks placed C&F under constant pressure. However, some of their youthful legs turned the game around as Maidens tired, seeing Vicky having to make a few dives. The second half was one of short corners and back to back attacks by both teams. A super game and super umpiring by both Ed and Donavan, finishing with Maidens winning 1-0.
The Maidens were further fueled by some wonderful support, camping chairs and cheers by our ladies 2's, families and friends. And a further thanks to the Trading team for allowing us to welcome the opo and serve some delicious cakes and treats in the clubhouse.
MVP went to Vicky for keeping a clean sheet and showing that she is back stronger than ever. Second most votes when to Faye for endless energy despite sore ski legs.
Terri was Grumpy Old Bint today. Jenny, awarded as Clown of the Day, literally clowning around Ame's ears about....can't remember anymore thanks to menopause. 3x more games to go for the unbeaten pink army.
