Match Report: Maidens of Mayhem O45 vs Wycombe – Masters Tournament Opener 2025–26

The Maidens of Mayhem kicked off their 2025–2026 Masters campaign with a tough opener against the ever-strong Wycombe side, familiar opponents with majority well-known faces from across the masters regional and national hockey world.

We knew it would be a challenge, and honour to be up against well-known names in the hockey world, but the Maidens’ hallmark strengths, camaraderie, quick thinking, sharp passing, and team unity, were out in full force.

Keeper Ali deserves a huge shoutout for going above and beyond, arriving early to umpire the U16s match before stepping into goal and delivering a stellar performance. What a trooper!

Some of the squad were still feeling a touch tender after Hunt’s birthday Tequila Rose the night before, but pulling on the famous pink kit soon put smiles (and a bit of sparkle) back on faces.

Wycombe piled on the pressure from the off, high balls, low drives, and several short corners kept our defence busy. Despite some heroic saves, we went into halftime 2–0 down.

After a quick regroup and a reminder to play our own game, the Maidens came out fighting in the second half with crisp passing and smart switches. Keeper Ali continued to frustrate the Wycombe attack, while the whole team raised the tempo and tightened the play.

A special thanks to Megan Savage, who stepped in as umpire and did a tremendous job, even earning praise from the opposition. It was truly a Savage family day, as Helen Savage took Lady of the Game for her outstanding defensive work, a complete wall at the back, with Ali a close runner-up for her tireless heroics in goal.

The final whistle saw a 4–0 result to Wycombe, but the match was anything but one-sided, it was full of end-to-end play, strong passages of hockey, and brilliant home support.

In true Maiden spirit, the day finished not with disappointment, but with laughter, birthday leftovers, Max’s famous banana cake, and a proper clubhouse catch-up.

And in this October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Maidens proudly dedicated the game to all our fellow sisters — standing united in strength, support, and solidarity. The post-match photo said it all: the team grinning, each Maiden proudly holding a breast (cup prop!) in support, though Helen and Ali took a little longer than most to find their cups!

Now it’s onward to Tier 2 — with strategic planning, Walker’s coaching sessions, a brand-new kit on the horizon, and, as ever, plenty of friendship both on and off the pitch.
